What is Micro-dermabrasion?

In my previous posts I have extensively discussed about Chemical Peel and Kaya  Skin Clinic Peel Services which you can check out here and here.Today let us see one more procedure meant for acne prone skin known as Microdermabrasion.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is one of the popular skin exfoliating treatments. It is suitable for all skin types.

It is a procedure where tiny aluminium oxide or magnesium oxide crystals are used to abrade the skin using vacuum suction pressure which causes exfoliation of the top skin layer and making skin soft and younger. The vaccum pressure varies as per skin type.

What are the benefits of Microdermabrasion?

  • Removes dead skin cells.
  • Unclogs pores and treats acne.
  • Treats acne scars(hyper-pigmentation and pitted acne scars)
  • Melasma and skin discolourations.
  • Works on age spots.
  • Anti-ageing.
  • Works on superficial wrinkles.

What are the Side-effects?

Microdermabrasion is a painless and non-invasive procedure. There are no major side effects except for:
  • Dryness.
  • Redness of skin.
  • Photo-sensitivity/Sun damage.

Is Microdermabrasion suitable for all?

Microdermabrasion can be safely done from 12+ years.

Are microdermabrasion home-kits effective?

Well no! The same effect of the procedure cannot be achieved with home kits.It is best done under medical supervision.

Can microdermabrasion be done on body?

Microdermabrasion can be safely done on face and body.

Cost of the ProcedureDuration of the Procedure
Rs 1000-2000 per sitting.
30-45 minutes.

Procedure:

Step 1:Face is cleansed.

Step 2:Eyes are covered with cotton pads.

Step 3:Vacuum suction pressure is adjusted according to your skin type and procedure is started.Area by area the skin is abraded. You can actually feel this skin polishing sort of effect.

Step 4:After the procedure is done cold compress is given to soothe the skin.

Step 5:If necessary black heads extraction is done.

Step 6:It is followed by a face mask as per skin type.

Step 7:Skin is cleansed.

Step 8:Sunscreen is applied.

Pre/Post Procedure Precautions:

1)Acne cream to be discontinued 2 days before and after Peel.

2)Immediately after procedure Sunscreen application  is a must. Re-apply if necessary.

3)Avoid Sun exposure as much as possible and wear protective clothing like hoodies /jackets,scarf ,umbrella etc.

4)Do not wash your face for 12 hours after procedure.

5)Use a neutral & mild cleanser like Kaya soothing gel cleanser  to wash your face.

6)Apply a oil free moisturiser like Aloe Vera Gels if necessary.

7)Do not use treatment cleansers (salicylic/glycolic acid cleansers) for 2-3 days after procedure as it could cause more dryness.

8)After 2-3 days you can resume you acne regimen.

9)If you see any redness, give a cold compress by wrapping ice cubes in a cloth.

10)If you face any irritation, consult your Doctor right away.

11)Avoid getting parlour procedures like Facials, Bleaching 3 days before/after procedure.

12)If you see any skin peeling/dryness ,do not panic. It is normal after chemical peeling. Just add a moisturizer at regular intervals. Avoid washing face with cleanser repeatedly, instead face it with plain water preferably cold water. Hot water can cause slight burning sensation and more dryness.

Final Verdict:

I have had about 6-8 sittings of Microdermabrasion in the past alternating with Chemical peel.My Skin type is oily and acne prone skin. Both almost have same benefits.Microdermabrasion helps pitted acne scars and other hyper-pigmentation skin issues.Now-a-days even parlours and salons are offering these services,my advise is get it done under medical supervision only. There is no recovery period after microdermabrasion, one can resume their daily routine without any issues.Just remember to wear sunscreen.Hope this helps! If you have any queries, please drop a comment below;)
