This is a guest post from Milan from Clear Skin Clinics.
Acne prone skin is one of the biggest problems a young person can have. Clear, Snow-White-like skin is something that we all strive for, especially with the media and magazines portraying photoshopped girls with glowing cheekbones around every corner. Roughly 85% of teenagers suffer from some form of acne, and even though it does mostly occur in this time span, adults can have just as much problems with this as the teens. From treatments to causes, here are ten things that you might not have known about acne.
1)Acne caused by genetics
TRUE- Even though you can irritate skin with make up and similar products, around 81% of acne problems come from genetics. This does not necessarily mean that if your parents had problematic skin, you will have it too. Most likely people within a family have very similar routines, diet habits and so on, so if you have the same probability for acne as your parents and have the same habits chances are you will get it. Genetics can make your skin more prone to developing acne problems in certain conditions, but luckily you can influence some of those conditions.
2)Acne caused by chocolate
PARTIALLY TRUE- Chocolate contains a lot of sugar and has a high glycemic level, both circumstances having been linked to the occurrence of acne. That being said, there has been no direct indicators of chocolate being directly responsible for acne. But we are what we eat, and certain bad habits such as eating too much sweets and processed foods can create an environment that can cause skin break-outs. If you have a sweet tooth, try limiting the intake to about once a week, and try eating dark chocolate. It has a much higher level of cocoa and a modest amount is actually healthy for you.
3)Poor Hygiene
FALSE- Some people might think that poor hygiene has something to do with skin break-outs, but that is actually completely false. If somebody tells you that you need to wash your face more than two times a day, feel free to ignore that advice completely. Acne is a process that goes deeper than the surface of your skin and irritating it with different soaps or cleansers will not make the situation better- instead you could actually make it worse by scrubbing away the protective layer off your skin and causing even bigger problems.
4)Poor Skin Treatment
TRUE- This one is very true. There are many different types of acne, and most of them require different types of treatment, depending what ingredients could best solve the issue you are having. Treating blackheads and cystic acne surely can't be done with one same product, so it is always best to consult a professional and find the best acne treatment for your skin, because using non-tested product could actually make your situation worse.
5)Squeezing pimples
TRUE- This is bad for several reasons. As previously mentioned, the pimple you are trying to squeeze out is not on the surface level, and if you are not a professional you can't really see how deep it is. First of all, it can aggravate your acne, making the pimple even more inflamed, bigger and more noticeable. Secondly, what you are trying to do is actually push bacteria out, which could lead to residue and more pimples on the same spot or closely surrounding it. And if done unprofessionally, squeezing pimples out often times leads to scaring. It is much better to be patient and treat the pimple the right way- it might be annoying but don't give in, it will go away pretty fast.
6)Acne only occurs with oily skin
FALSE- Dry skin can be just as prone to acne as oily skin. In fact, a lot of acne products try to dry out the skin by blocking the production of sebum, but this can only work for a short while. If you look at acne as an underlying and ongoing process which it is, drying out the surface of your skin won't really do you much good. That's why it's important to moisturize your skin and take care of it's protective layer, or else it could become a breeding ground for bacteria.
7)Acne only hits in puberty
FALSE- Even though a high percentage of teens do experience the biggest acne problems, many people suffer from this issue in their 20's, even 30's. Moreover, since acne can be caused by all sorts of factors, many young adults in their 20's suffer from hormone-caused acne which mostly occurs on the chin and cheeks.
8)Toothpaste can cure acne
FALSE- This might be one of the biggest lies ever. What tooth paste actually does is dry out your skin, but it doesn't have any components that can actually cure a pimple. In fact, some ingredients of toothpaste actually clog pores, which creates an even bigger problem. Stop treatments are normally just a fix for a much bigger underlying problem, but when in need, there still are much better and professional products to help out in these situations.
